20.9 million viewers for the final in France and 25% extra out of home audience

2018 Football World Cup

During the World Cup, French TV viewers enthusiastically gathered together to follow their team’s progress through the competition, be it out of home or at friends' or family’s home.

Watching outside the home at first: in public places, bars and restaurants, where more and more big screens sprang up throughout the competition. On average, these screens generated 15% (1) in additional audiences during the first five matches played by France (See our Press Release from 11 July), and these extra viewer numbers rose gradually to 25% on the day of the final. These figures mirrored the exceptional nature of the event itself.

Additionally, the football was being enjoyed on TV at home among friends and family; and the number of people coming over kept on growing as the national squad progressed. Indeed, the France-Croatia final brought together a total of 20.9 million TV viewers (2) (excluding public places, bars, restaurants, etc..) of whom 15% were guests, compared to 6% for the competition as a whole.

(1) Estimate based on the Personal Portable Audience Measurement testing conducted by Médiamétrie since May.
(2) Médiamat 4 Screens – all channels which had broadcast the competition on a TV screen + internet screens.
